Cookies

The cookies and saved preferences the student system and Learn actually set.

What this page covers

This page lists the cookies and the preferences stored in this browser by the student system and by Learn. It lists only what those apps set. It does not describe another website you open from a link.

These apps do not set an advertising cookie. Signing out clears the sign-in session. You can also clear site data in the browser, which removes the preferences below.

Sign-in session

Signing in sets session cookies whose names start with sb-. They keep you signed in. A long session can be split across more than one cookie. On a college address, the session can be shared between the student system and Learn for that college only. It is not shared across every college on Collegene. Signing out clears the session cookies.

Light and dark on the student system

The student system sets one preference cookie, cg-mode, when you use the Light or Dark control. It remembers only that choice. It holds no personal details. It lasts one year, is limited to this site, and uses SameSite=Lax. It is not set until you choose.

Learn display and bandwidth

Learn stores the theme in this browser under the name collegene-learn-theme, as light or dark. If you have not chosen, Learn follows the device. A separate Low bandwidth control, in the account menu and on the classroom page, is stored under collegene-learn-bandwidth as low or standard.

Low bandwidth on a lesson is switched in Playback settings. That choice also sets a cookie named learn-bandwidth, with the value low or full. The cookie is limited to this site, uses SameSite=Lax, and lasts until the browser session ends. It tells the downloads page whether low bandwidth is on.

Offline study

When you are signed in on Learn, a cookie named learn-cache names this browser's offline lesson store so the right copy is used. It is limited to this host, uses SameSite=Lax, and is cleared when you sign out. The lessons themselves are stored in the browser's offline storage, not in the cookie. Signing out removes that copy.

Moving a sign-in between the two sites

While a sign-in is passed between the student system and Learn, a cookie named cgn_handoff_verifier is set. It lasts a few minutes at most, and it is removed when that step finishes. It is there so the handoff can be checked. It is not a preference and it is not kept for later.

Preferences saved on this device

Learn also saves a few choices in local storage on this device. They stay until you clear site data, or until the app replaces them.

  • collegene-learn-video-quality stores auto, 720p, 360p or 240p. Any other value is read as auto.
  • collegene-learn-playback-speed stores 0.75, 1, 1.25, 1.5 or 2. Any other value is read as 1. The speed is remembered only when it is one of those values.
  • collegene-learn-reading, followed by the college and your account, stores text size, theme, dyslexia font, and the low bandwidth and audio only choices made in Playback settings.
  • collegene-learn-chrome, followed by a scope, stores whether the side rail, the lesson list and the notes pane are collapsed. The panes are nav, outline and notes. For the side rail, 0 means expanded, and any other value is treated as collapsed.
  • collegene.assistant.open stores whether the assistant panel was left open, as 1 or 0.
  • collegene.assistant.notice stores 1 once you have dismissed the short assistant notice.

How to clear them

Sign out to clear the session and the offline lesson copy. Use the browser's site settings to remove cookies and local storage for this address if you want the theme, quality and reading choices forgotten as well. Removing them signs you out and resets those preferences. It does not delete the student record. To ask for deletion of your account, use Data deletion.
